45th District Youth Advisory Council Highlights Next Generation of Leaders

Last week, I had the opportunity to host my first Youth Advisory Council at Highland Community College, bringing together more than 80 high school students from across the 45th District for a day focused on understanding state government and sharing their perspectives.

What stood out most was how thoughtful and informed these students are. They raised concerns about the condition of our roads, Illinois’ second-highest-in-the-nation gas taxes, and rising property taxes that are making it harder for families to afford to live here. These are not abstract issues. They are real challenges they are already experiencing.

Students also discussed public safety and the importance of fair legislative maps, showing a clear awareness of the issues shaping our state. One of the highlights was watching them step into the role of lawmakers, drafting and debating their own ideas, including proposals on trade opportunities, financial literacy, and housing affordability.

Spending the day with these students was a powerful reminder that the future of Illinois is already taking shape. I look forward to continuing this program and helping more young people get involved.

Building Stronger Voter Engagement in the 45th District

This year’s primary election served as an important reminder that we all have a role to play in shaping the future of our communities.

In some counties across the 45th District, voter turnout showed there is still room for improvement. In Jo Daviess County, 19% of registered voters cast a ballot. Stephenson County reached 25%, while Winnebago County came in at 21%. Carroll County saw 24% turnout.

While every election brings out engaged and informed voters, these numbers show that too many voices are still missing from the process.

The good news is that we have the opportunity to change that.

Voting is one of the most direct ways we can make our voices heard and ensure our communities are represented. Whether it’s a primary or a general election, participation matters.

I encourage everyone across the 45th District to stay informed, stay engaged, and take part in the next election. Together, we can build a stronger, more active electorate.

Meeting with Local Leaders at Forage and Grassland Council

It was great to join the Northwestern Illinois Forage and Grassland Council for their annual meeting and spend time with the hardworking men and women who help drive our local economy.

During the meeting, I provided an update on what’s happening in Springfield, including ongoing legislative discussions and the direction our state is heading. More importantly, I had the opportunity to hear directly from attendees on the issues that matter most to them.

We had a productive conversation on topics like gerrymandering, farming and land use policies, and the impact of illegal immigration on our communities. These are real concerns that affect Illinois families and businesses across northwest Illinois.

I always appreciate the chance to connect with the people who keep our communities strong. Their input is critical as I continue working to represent the 45th District in Springfield.

Session Picks Up as Focus Turns Back to Springfield

With the primary elections now behind us, attention in Springfield is turning fully back to the legislative work ahead.

This is the time of year when things really begin to pick up. Committee work ramps up, more bills are heard and we start to see which proposals are moving forward and gaining real traction.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be digging into legislation that could directly impact communities across the 45th District. I encourage everyone to stay informed and pay attention to the legislation that affects you and your family. If there are issues you’re concerned about or support, I want to hear from you. Your input helps ensure I’m representing the priorities of our district.

As session moves forward, I remain focused on doing the work and delivering results for the people I serve. Please feel free to contact my office at any time.
