One of the most encouraging developments of the past year is the resurgence in military recruitment across the United States.
After years of recruiting challenges, our Armed Forces are once again seeing more Americans step forward and answer the call to serve. That is a major accomplishment for our country and a positive sign for our future.
Before looking at the numbers, I think it is important to recognize what military service means.
The United States military is the strongest fighting force in the world, and the men and women who wear the uniform carry an enormous responsibility. They defend our freedoms and stand ready when our country needs them.
There are few greater forms of service than being willing to put on that uniform and defend your fellow Americans.
Those who make that commitment also develop something our country desperately needs in its future leaders: a warrior mindset. It means discipline, toughness, accountability, and the willingness to keep moving forward when things get difficult. Those values do not disappear when someone leaves the military. Veterans bring them back to their families, careers, and communities.
That is one reason the latest recruiting numbers are worth celebrating.
In Fiscal Year 2025, our military posted some of its strongest recruiting results in years:
- Army: Goal of 61,000 recruits; 62,050 attained, reaching 101.72% of its goal.
- Navy: Goal of 40,600 recruits; 44,096 attained, reaching 108.61% of its goal.
- Air Force: Goal of 30,100 recruits; 30,166 attained, reaching 100.22% of its goal.
- Space Force: Goal of 796 recruits; 819 attained, reaching 102.89% of its goal.
- Marine Corps: Goal of 26,600 recruits; 26,600 attained, reaching 100% of its goal.
Together, the five service branches achieved an average of roughly 103% of their recruiting goals. Nearly every branch met its target, and four of the five exceeded it.
Those numbers represent thousands of Americans who chose to serve something larger than themselves.
The change in leadership in Washington has played an important role in restoring that confidence. President Trump has made restoring that mission a central priority: high standards, readiness, lethality, accountability, and an Armed Forces focused on winning.
It is not a coincidence that Americans are responding.
Americans want to be part of something they believe in. They want leadership they can trust and a mission with meaning. We should continue promoting those values rather than moving away from them.
This matters here at home, too.
Military recruitment remains important throughout Northwest Illinois. The 45th Senate District and surrounding communities are served by recruiting offices representing multiple branches of the Armed Forces and the Illinois National Guard. These recruiters provide a local connection for young men and women interested in serving their country and learning about the opportunities military service can provide.
We should be encouraging those conversations. A strong military does more than protect us from threats abroad. It develops leaders and gives Americans skills and experience they can carry throughout their lives.
Most importantly, a strong military ensures that when America faces a challenge, we have men and women prepared to meet it.
As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday this year, there is no better time to recognize the generations of Americans who have answered the call to defend this nation and those stepping forward today to carry that tradition into the future.
Seeing recruitment rebound should make us proud, but we cannot become complacent. We must continue strengthening our military and encouraging the next generation of Americans who are willing to step forward.
There will always be threats to our country. There will always be adversaries in this world who exploit weakness, but respect strength.
Our country needs warriors. It needs leaders. And it needs Americans willing to serve.
More Americans are answering that call again.
That is good news for our military, and great news for our country.
