The Weaponization of Justice Ends Now: Senator Andrew Chesney Reacts to “Unconditional Discharge” Decision for President Donald Trump

On Friday morning, New York Judge Juan Merchan vindicated President Donald Trump with an unconditional discharge in relation to convictions received in 2024 in a case many believed was a politically motivated attempt to interfere in the Election. An unconditional discharge means the President will not face imprisonment, probation, supervision, or any other conditions, underscoring the case’s flimsy foundation. Following the sentencing, State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) issued the following statement:

“This wasn’t the pursuit of justice—it was a disgraceful weaponization of our courts to target an opponent who dared to stand against the politically powerful. The American people saw through this charade, and now, finally, so has the judicial system.

“The American people deserve better, and today’s ruling should serve as a warning to anyone who seeks to weaponize the rule of law for personal or political vendettas—we won’t stand for it. The weaponization of justice ends now.

“This decision is a step in the right direction, but it is crucial that we ensure the courts are never used to undermine the character or tarnish the reputation of any individual for political purposes.”
