On April 10, the Illinois House of Representatives passed House Bill 1237, a deeply flawed proposal that would ban native-themed mascots and logos in schools across the state beginning July 1, 2026.
This bill threatens to erase generations of local tradition, school spirit, and community pride – all under the banner of a woke political agenda. Its language is vague, inconsistent, and poorly crafted, leaving school districts with more confusion than clarity and the potential for significant financial burdens.
Here is a list of the schools in the 45th Senate District that would be impacted by HB 1237:
Blackhawk Elementary
Winnebago Middle School
Winnebago High School
Dorthy Simon Elementary
Jean McNair Elementary School
Warren Jr/Sr High School

We believe this is less about helping anyone and more about pushing a political agenda. Several schools in our area would be unfairly impacted, and we’re calling on the Senate to put a stop to it.
Add your name below if you agree it’s time to protect our schools from out-of-touch, one-size-fits-all mandates. Together, we can send a strong message to Springfield and protect local traditions.
