Chesney Invites Students to Take on Summer Reading Challenge

I’m encouraging students across the 45th District to stay engaged this summer by taking part in my annual Summer Reading program.

The challenge is simple: if you’re entering 1st through 8th grade, I’m asking you to read eight books before August 15th. Summer is a great time to build strong reading habits, explore new interests, and keep your mind sharp while school is out.

I encourage students to visit their local libraries, pick out books they’re excited about, and track their progress along the way. Once you’ve finished all eight books, you can fill out a short online form to complete the challenge.

Students who participate will receive an official certificate of recognition from the Illinois Senate. It’s a great way to celebrate your hard work and commitment to learning.

Contact Lori at LYates@sgop.ilga.gov for any questions.

Free Community Shred Event Set for May 16 in Machesney Park

I’m inviting residents of the 45th District to take part in a free Community Shred Event on Saturday, May 16, to safely dispose of sensitive documents and help protect against identity theft.

I’m proud to partner with Mayor Steve Johnson to host this event in Machesney Park. It’s a simple and secure way to get rid of old paperwork like bank statements, tax returns, bills, receipts, credit card applications, and outdated medical records.

The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Machesney Town Center, located at 8702 N. 2nd Street. Shredding will take place on-site, giving residents peace of mind that their personal information is properly destroyed.

To keep things moving efficiently, each vehicle will be limited to two banker boxes of paper documents, and electronics will not be accepted. The event will end at noon or once the shredding truck reaches capacity.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact my office at (815) 232-0774.

Lena’s Gennings Dunker Headed to the NFL

Congratulations to Gennings Dunker, a resident of Lena and the 45th District, on being drafted to the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 96th pick in the NFL Draft.

Gennings has already made his mark as a standout athlete and a leader our communities can rally behind. He helped lead Lena-Winslow to a state championship, showing early on the kind of toughness and discipline that would carry him to the next level.

At the University of Iowa, he became a cornerstone of the Hawkeyes’ offensive line, starting 38 games over three seasons and earning All-Big Ten honors from both coaches and media. He was also part of the Joe Moore Award-winning unit, recognized as the best offensive line in college football.

Gennings is a great example of the kind of work ethic and character we see every day in the 45th District. We are excited to watch him take the next step and represent Lena on the national stage.

Again, Congratulations, Gennings and best of luck at the next level!
