Senator Chesney Blames Toxic Work Environment Established by Democrats for Layoffs at Freeport’s Newell Brands Facility

On Thursday, Atlanta, Georgia-based Newell Brands announced the layoff of approximately 75 employees at its Freeport, Illinois facility. In response to the announcement, State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) issued the following statement:

“On the heels of the closure of the Belvidere Chrysler plant last week, this is another blow to the economy of Northwest Illinois. It is unfortunate that such a well-established company in the Freeport community has found it necessary to reduce its workforce. It just proves that no town in Illinois is immune from the effects of the toxic business policies coming out of Springfield.

“There is an undeniable anti-business climate that continues to be perpetuated by the Majority Party Democrats in this state, and it seems as though every business bill we see in the Legislature takes further aim at our businesses’ bottom lines. We must get on the side of our job creators and establish a friendlier environment that helps our businesses thrive rather than continually cutting them off at the knees and forcing layoffs and other unpopular business decisions that devastate communities.”
