On February 13, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for allegedly violating immigration laws passed by the U.S. Congress. In response to the impeachment vote, State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) issued the following statement:
“I applaud the efforts by the U.S. House to impeach Secretary Mayorkas, who has been at the helm of the worst border disaster in this country’s history. While I have filed legislation in the Illinois Senate to help stem the flow of migrants into Illinois, true immigration reform must take place at the federal level. I view the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas as a necessary first step and encourage the U.S. Senate to proceed expeditiously with a trial.”
