In response to the approval of legislation in Springfield on Friday that essentially weaponizes the Illinois Attorney General’s Office to go after non-profit pregnancy resource centers that offer counseling on alternatives to abortion, State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) issued the following statement:
“Extremism is not a new topic of discussion in the political debate, but we are now seeing a new level of extremism— the weaponization of elected offices to allow officials to go after people who have beliefs that are ideologically in contrast with their own. We saw it in New York with the weaponization of the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in his quest to put a former President behind bars, and today we saw it in the Illinois Senate when Democrats weaponized the Illinois Attorney General’s office to allow him to go after non-profit pregnancy resource centers that offer counseling and services to women of all backgrounds who are seeking information about alternatives to abortion.
“Now, rather than having a debate like we’ve had in the past, we’re weaponizing the Attorney General’s Office and allowing him to harass and criminalize not-for-profit entities that help people across the state, just because they offer an alternative to the establishment’s point of view.”
