Christmas came early this year for the Scales Mound High School Trap Team, when State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) surprised the students and coaches on December 5 with a $500 scholarship to help support the program. The scholarship was made available by the Illinois Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus.
“The Illinois Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus works to protect and advance policies that promote hunting, fishing, trapping, and wildlife management. As a member, this year I was able to provide a $500 scholarship to a program that supports these activities,” said Chesney. “Trap shooting requires a great deal of skill and practice, and I was pleased to be able to present a check for $500 that will help with the purchase of ammunition and jerseys for the Trap Team at Scales Mound High School.”
According to Chesney, the Illinois Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus is the largest and one of the oldest caucuses in the General Assembly, and includes membership from the Senate and House. With regard to trap shooting, Illinois is home to about 500,000 recreational shooters, and trap shooting is a sport that can be enjoyed by sportsmen and women of all ages.
“We want to thank Senator Chesney for his generous financial support of our Trap Team,” said Head Coach Jeremy Williams. “Trap shooting helps develop accuracy and the ability to follow a fast-moving target, so the Senator’s financial support will go far in helping students improve skills they will be able to use their whole lives.”
The Scales Mound Hornets Trap Team competes annually in competitions at the local, regional, and state level.
