Thank you to everyone who came out to our Community Shred Event in Machesney Park this weekend. We were excited to welcome more than 300 residents from across the 45th District who took advantage of the opportunity to safely dispose of sensitive documents and help protect themselves from identity theft.

I was proud to partner with Mayor Steve Johnson to host this event and provide a free service that helps local families securely get rid of old paperwork and personal records. Events like this are a simple but meaningful way to support our communities and connect with residents outside of Springfield.

I also want to thank everyone who helped make the event possible, including the volunteers, staff, and shredding crew who kept things organized and running smoothly throughout the morning. Their hard work helped make the event a success.

We truly enjoyed meeting with residents and appreciate everyone who took the time to stop by and participate. I look forward to continuing to host community events that provide helpful resources and bring people together across the district.

The annual Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Firefighter Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony serves as an important opportunity to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters across our state. Every day, these men and women put themselves in harm’s way to protect Illinois families and communities.

This year’s ceremony honored firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty while also recognizing firefighters who demonstrated extraordinary courage and professionalism during emergency situations. Thirteen firefighters received the Firefighter Excellence Award for acts of service in the line of duty, and three firefighters were awarded the Medal of Valor for acts of heroism in dangerous conditions.

The State of Illinois also presented its highest honor for firefighter bravery, the Medal of Honor, to Firefighter/EMT Kevin McNicholas of the Chicago Fire Department and Firefighter/Paramedic Gino Casciola of the Addison Fire Protection District. Their actions reflect the incredible dedication and selflessness that firefighters show when responding to emergencies.

The memorial ceremony is a reminder that behind every call for help is a firefighter willing to step forward and serve others, even at great personal risk. Illinois owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the firefighters who continue to protect our communities and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

With just two weeks left before the May 31 adjournment, Illinois lawmakers are in the final stretch of the spring session, and the pressure is on.

The biggest fight ahead is the state budget. Governor J.B. Pritzker’s proposed $56 billion FY 26-27 plan relies on more than $700 million in new taxes and accounting gimmicks at a time when Illinois families are already crushed by the highest property taxes in the nation and a painful affordability crisis.

I am at the table fighting to protect taxpayers from yet another bloated spending plan built on higher taxes. We are pushing hard for a responsible budget that actually delivers relief to hardworking families and businesses instead of more tricks and tax hikes.

We are also dealing with a megaprojects bill aimed at keeping the Bears in Illinois, another massive proposal that comes with serious taxpayer risk.

Illinois cannot afford Pritzker’s tax-and-spend agenda. In these final days, Senate Republicans will keep fighting for fiscal restraint and real relief for the people who pay the bills.

The good people of Illinois just caught a rare breath of fresh air in the tax hellscape that is Springfield. The so-called “Millionaire Tax,” that shiny new 3% surcharge on income over a million bucks, died a quiet, whimpering death in the General Assembly after it missed the May 3rd constitutional deadline. No fanfare, no victory laps from the usual suspects, just the sweet sound of another Democratic money grab hitting the pavement.

This is just another desperate attempt by Democrats to hammer successful people and job creators with higher taxes. They tried selling this lemon as laser-focused on a tiny group, but Illinois families have seen this rerun before. Remember, the 2020 progressive income tax referendum? Voters crushed it. Yet here came the same crowd, Pritzker and his band of Taxaholics Anonymous rejects, pushing a sequel nobody asked for.

Why the sudden stall? Maybe, just maybe, enough Democrats realized attaching another flaming tax failure to JB Pritzker’s résumé wasn’t the smartest move for a guy with presidential stars in his eyes. Nothing says “national leader” like getting slapped down twice in your own backyard. They finally figured out that Illinoisans aren’t buying the “only millionaires will pay” con anymore.

Our state is already taxed to the breaking point. Sky-high property taxes, punishing sales taxes, rising grocery bills, soaring energy costs, and fees on nearly everything. Families are drowning in taxes. The solution sure isn’t another massive tax increase.

And let’s talk about who really gets hammered. Small businesses, the economic backbone of this state, file as pass-through entities. That “millionaire tax” would have jacked their top marginal rate from 4.95% to 7.95%, a brutal 61% hike. We’re talking about over 22,000 local shops, family farms, contractors, restaurants, and manufacturers. These aren’t Wall Street titans with private jets; they’re the folks signing paychecks in Freeport, Machesney Park, Rockton, Galena and throughout northwest Illinois.

Businesses don’t eat tax increases. They pass them on to you: higher prices at the register, frozen wages, fewer hires, canceled expansions. Economists have beaten this drum for decades. Soak the job creators and watch hiring and paychecks shrink. Illinois already has some of the worst unemployment and anemic wage growth in America. Why make those problems worse?

Then there’s the Democrats’ favorite Trojan horse: bracket creep. They start with “just the millionaires,” but give Springfield a new higher bracket and watch how fast the goalposts move. Today it’s a million. Tomorrow? Half a million. Then your neighborhood dentist or successful farmer. History shows these “temporary” progressive schemes expand until the middle class foots the bill.

Look around the country. The outmigration of blue states is real. Places like California, New York—blue states that went full “eat the rich”—have watched businesses flee, investment dry up, and residents leave for Florida, Texas, and Tennessee. Illinois is already bleeding people and employers. Instead of fixing the mess—bloated spending, pension disasters, corrupt patronage—the Pritzker Posse keeps rolling out the same tired menu: more taxes, more government, more excuses.

Illinois doesn’t have a revenue problem. It has a spending addiction problem. The people knew it in 2020 when they rejected the last tax increase. They know it now. That’s why this latest grift collapsed before it ever reached a ballot.

Working families, small business owners, and everyday Illinoisans don’t need more lectures from out-of-touch leftist legislators about “fairness.” They need relief. They need leaders who understand that you don’t grow an economy by punishing success and chasing away the productive.

The “Millionaire Tax” is dead, for now. But don’t kid yourself. These folks never quit. They’ll be back with new slogans and the same old appetite for your wallet.

Illinois dodged one this time. Next time, we need to make sure the Democrat Taxaholics don’t get another shot.

I joined officers, families, and community members from across Illinois at the State Capitol this week for the annual Illinois Peace Officers Memorial ceremony, a solemn event recognizing the brave men and women who gave their lives in the line of duty.

The day began with a procession of squad cars representing agencies from across the state before transitioning into the memorial service, where eight officers were formally added to the Illinois Peace Officers Memorial.

Among those remembered this year were Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera and Park Forest Detective Tim Jones, both of whom lost their lives while serving and protecting their communities. Six historical officers were also honored during the ceremony, ensuring their sacrifices are recognized and remembered alongside those lost more recently.

Standing alongside law enforcement officers from every corner of Illinois was a powerful reminder of the risks these men and women take every day to keep our communities safe. Ceremonies like this matter because they ensure the courage and sacrifice of these officers are never forgotten.

I had a great meeting recently with the Illinois Baptists for Biblical Values and appreciated the opportunity to sit down and talk about the importance of civic engagement, faith, and staying involved in the future of our state.

One thing that stood out to me was their commitment to educating Illinoisans about the legislative process and encouraging people to take an active role in their communities. From voter registration and communicating with legislators to tracking legislation and even encouraging people to run for office, they are focused on making sure citizens stay informed and engaged.

We also discussed the important role churches and community leaders can play in encouraging respectful conversations about the issues facing Illinois. Their mission of equipping pastors and community members to engage thoughtfully in both civic and spiritual discussions is something I appreciated hearing more about.

Most importantly, we talked about the need for people across Illinois to stay connected to what is happening in Springfield and continue making their voices heard. I appreciate the thoughtful discussion and their commitment to serving communities across our state.

I recently had the opportunity to meet with Highland Community College President Chris Kuberski and board members Pennie Groezinger and Shawn Boldt while they were in Springfield. I appreciated the chance to sit down and talk about the future of the college and the opportunities ahead for students and the surrounding communities.

We had a productive conversation about the direction of Highland and some of the exciting ideas being discussed, including the potential to expand academic opportunities through additional four-year programs. Expanding access to higher education locally could create even more pathways for students to continue their education and build successful careers while staying connected to their communities.

It is encouraging to see Highland Community College continuing to look ahead and invest in ways to better serve students, families, and the broader community. I appreciate President Kuberski and the board members taking the time to share their vision and discuss the college’s future.

I got to meet with Freeport firefighters Brandon Reese, Kaleb Rucker, and Mark Honerbaum while they were in Springfield attending the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois Legislative Conference.

I appreciated them taking the time to stop by the Capitol and discuss some of the issues impacting firefighters, emergency responders, and public safety in communities across Illinois. Conversations like these are important because the men and women serving on the front lines every day have firsthand knowledge of the challenges departments are facing and the resources needed to keep communities safe.

Firefighters play a critical role not only in responding to emergencies, but also in protecting families and supporting local communities. Hearing directly from those who serve provides valuable insight into how policies made in Springfield affect departments back home.

I want to thank Brandon, Kaleb, and Mark for their service and dedication to the Freeport area. I appreciate their commitment to keeping their communities safe and their willingness to engage in discussions about the future of public safety in Illinois.

I’m inviting residents of the 45th District to take part in a free Community Shred Event on Saturday, May 16, to safely dispose of sensitive documents and help protect against identity theft.

I’m proud to partner with Mayor Steve Johnson to host this event in Machesney Park. It’s a simple and secure way to get rid of old paperwork like bank statements, tax returns, bills, receipts, credit card applications, and outdated medical records.

The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Machesney Town Center, located at 8702 N. 2nd Street. Shredding will take place on-site, giving residents peace of mind that their personal information is properly destroyed.

To keep things moving efficiently, each vehicle will be limited to two banker boxes of paper documents, and electronics will not be accepted. The event will end at noon or once the shredding truck reaches capacity.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact my office at (815) 232-0774.
